O.C.E.A.N., Inc. Managers/Supervisors participated in an Essential Coaching Practices for Leadership and Management Workshop

Coaching is one of the most important aspects to leadership and management within an organization. On Friday, O.C.E.A.N., Inc. Managers/Supervisors and President/CEO Tamica Mickle participated in a ‘Coaching Practices’ Workshop provided by Christopher D’Marco, OD Consultant, Trainer and Coach from Change and Response Strategies LLC.

During the workshop, qualities of a successful manager were discussed including goal setting as leaders help their team set goals to further their career including skills and investment in each person as a professional. Adapting management styles was explained including ‘Situational Management/Leadership’ which lets a leader change their management style to match their team's needs and the environment's demands ultimately improving guidance and support.

Throughout the training, participants were briefed on constructive criticism to assist in their team’s growth and to be open to feedback from their team. The different levels of listening including attentive and active/reflecting listening methods were relayed to help managers and their team understand each other’s needs, interests, and perceptions using tools such as welcoming body-language, eye contact, paraphrasing, validation and summarizing.

In group settings of 4 per table, staff participated in training discussions including expectation setting. Participants were asked to list two job responsibilities, two standards for each responsibility, expectations per responsibility and the benefit for carrying out the responsibility showing the process of clearly defining and communicating what is expected of each other or something within the organization.

“One of the most important things to remember from today’s meeting is to meet people where they are and raise the bar,” said Coach Christopher D’Marco. Respect and honor someone’s current life situation, rather than trying to change it.” Sometimes you have to let people work their way through their self-imposed obstacles.

Overall, leaders build trust and mutual respect with their team by being open and honest, providing support, and showing genuine interest in their development. Open communication is vital to communicating effectively with each team to accomplish tasks and meet expected goals.

A virtual follow-up session will follow, reinforcing strategies learned.
